Empire State Realty Trust’s portfolio is comprised of approximately 9.4 million rentable square feet of office space, 700,000 rentable square feet of retail space and 625 units across two multifamily properties. Owner of the Empire State Building, the World’s Most Famous Building, ESRT also owns and operates its iconic, newly reimagined Observatory Experience.

Empire State Realty Trust has a commitment to integrated portfolio-wide strategies for environmental, social and governance (“ESG”) initiatives. ESG principles play an important role in their capital allocation, innovation process and the way in which they interact with their stakeholders. Their sustainability program is structured around quantifiable improvement in key areas, including: energy efficiency, water efficiency, recycling and waste diversion and healthy work environments for their tenants and employees (indoor environmental quality, or “IEQ”). Key performance indicators allow them to measure the success of their sustainability efforts.

Empire State Realty Trust signed on to the Better Climate Challenge committing to a 50% reduction in GHG emissions across their 9 million square foot portfolio over 10 years. The company has an internal goal for carbon-neutral operations at the Empire State Building by 2030 and the portfolio by 2035. Strategies for reduction include reduction of energy usage and emissions, offsetting with renewable energy, and developing on-site or community-based renewable energy and storage where viable.

Empire State Realty Trust received a 2023 Better Project Award for creating a long-term plan for carbon and energy reduction at the Empire State Building.

Empire State Realty Trust received a 2023 Better Practice Award for implementing a decarbonization plan that addresses water and waste reduction while prioritizing occupant health.
